    In 2015, millions of residents of São Paulo faced daily water shutoffs during the region’s worst recorded drought. Earlier this year, Cape Town became the second global city to experience a major water shortage. Cities in the United States—among them Phoenix, Los Angeles, Amarillo, and Lincoln, Nebraska—are increasingly seeing issues of water security. In fact, experts estimate that the Ogallala Aquifer, on which about 1.9 million people in the central United States rely for their water, could dry up in the next 50 years. Once drained, it will take 6,000 years for the aquifer to be replenished.
